Education and Science (Kirstin Lambert, SC-ES@parliament.govt.nz) The committee met on 17 November to consider the Petition of Lance Cottam and 7509 others, and the 2003/04 financial reviews of Career Services, Learning Media Limited, and the Foundation for Research Science and Technology. The committee next meets on 25 November when it will hear evidence on the Education (Establishment of Universities) Amendment Bill. The meeting will be held in Auckland at Gladstone Room, Kingsgate Hotel Parnell, 92-102 Gladstone Road, Parnell, and will be open to the public.
Finance and Expenditure (Lesley Ferguson, SC-FE@parliament.govt.nz) As the House was in urgency this week, the committee meeting scheduled for 17 November, did not occur. Next week, the committee is scheduled to meet on 24 November to consider the 2003/04 financial reviews of the Department of Labour and the Inland Revenue Department, and to hear evidence on the 2003/04 financial reviews of Television New Zealand and Radio New Zealand. The committee will be open to the public for the hearings of evidence from
10.00 am. The committee has called for submissions on the Customs and Excise (Motor Spirits) Amendment Bill, with a closing date of 26 November 2004. Submissions should be addressed to Clerk of Committee, Finance and Expenditure Committee Secretariat, Parliament House, WELLINGTON. The committee requires 25 copies of each submission.
Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade (David Sanders, SC-FD@parliament.govt.nz) The committee did not meet this week due to urgency. The committee will continue with its 2003/04 financial reviews by hearing from the Ministry of Defence and the New Zealand Defence Force on 2 December.
Government Administration (Nerina Bennett, SC-GA@parliament.govt.nz) The Government Administration Committee met on Thursday, 18 November 2004 to consider the Identity (Citizenship and Travel Documents) Bill. The committee also reported on the 2003/04 financial reviews of Archives New Zealand and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. The committee will not be meeting in the adjournment.
Health (Catherine Parkin, SC-Health@parliament.govt.nz) This week the committee had a shortened meeting due to urgency. The committee considered several items of business. Next Wednesday the committee will hear evidence on the Misuse of Drugs Amendment Bill (No 3). This will be open to the public from 9.25 am to 11.50 am, at Parliament House in Wellington. The committee will also consider its 2003/04 financial review of the Ministry of Health, and the Injury Prevention, Rehabilitation, and Compensation Amendment Bill (No 3). The committee is inviting public submissions on Supplementary Order Paper 298, which proposes amendments to the Misuse of Drugs Amendment Bill (No 3). The closing date for submissions is 31 January 2005. Copies of the supplementary order paper can be purchased from Bennetts Government Bookshops.
The supplementary order paper adds a new Part and Schedule to the Misuse of Drugs Amendment Bill (No 3), which would regulate activities relating to restricted substances. A restricted substance would be a substance specified or described in the Schedule to the Part. The committee requires 25 copies of each submission. Those wishing to include any information of a private or personal nature in a submission should first discuss this with the clerk of the committee, as submissions are usually released to the public by the committee. Those wishing to appear before the committee to speak to their submissions should state this clearly and provide a daytime telephone contact number. Justice and Electoral (Angela Van Dam, SC-JE@parliament.govt.nz) The committee did not meet this week. The committee will meet on 23 November to consider the Civil Union Bill. It will then meet in Auckland on 24 November to hear evidence on the New Zealand Sign Language Bill. The meeting in Auckland will be held at the Alexandra Park Raceway, in the Tasman room on Level 2 of the Centennial stand, and will be open to the public from 9.30 am to 12.00 pm and from 1.00 pm to 3.30 pm.
Law and Order (Tracey Rayner, SC-LO@parliament.govt.nz) The committee did not meet this week and will not meeting in the adjournment. The committee is scheduled to next meet on 1 December to consider and hear evidence on the 2003/04 financial review of the Department of Corrections. The meeting will be open to the public for the hearings from 9.45 am to 12 pm. Further consideration will also be given to the 2003/04 financial review of the Serious Fraud Office.
Local Government and Environment (Beth Watson, SC-LGE@parliament.govt.nz) At its meeting on 18 November the committee completed its consideration of the Wellington Regional Council (Water Board Functions) Bill. The committee also completed its consideration of Petition 2002/0019 of Rex McLeod.
Maori Affairs (Miles Reay, SC-MA@parliament.govt.nz) The committee met on 16 and 18 November to consider the Te Runanga o Ngati Awa Bill and the Ngati Awa Claims Settlement Bill. It will next meet on 22 November to hear evidence on the financial review of Te Puni Kokiri (Ministry of Maori Development), and to further consider the Te Runanga o Ngati Awa Bill and the Ngati Awa Claims Settlement Bill. Part of the meeting relating to the financial review will be open to the public. The committee is calling for public submissions on the Ngati Tuwharetoa (Bay of Plenty) Claims Settlement Bill. The bill aims to record the acknowledgements and apology between the Crown and Ngati Tuwharetoa (Bay of Plenty) in the deed of settlement dated 6 June 2003 between the Crown and Ngati Tuwharetoa (Bay of Plenty), and to give effect to settlement of historical claims agreed by the Crown and Ngati Tuwharetoa (Bay of Plenty) in that deed. Copies of the bill can be purchased from Bennetts Government Bookshops.

Primary Production (Bob Bunch, SC-PP@parliament.govt.nz) The committee met twice this week on the Aquaculture Reform Bill. There was no meeting on 11 November 2004 because of urgency. Next week the committee will meet twice, on 24 and 25 November, to give further consideration to the issues arising from the hearings on the Aquaculture Reform Bill.
Social Services (Graham Hill, SC-SS@parliament.govt.nz) The committee met on 18 November to consider further the Disabled Persons Employment Promotion (Repeal and Related Matters) Bill. The committee will meet next on 2 December to hear evidence on the 2003/04 financial review of Department of Child, Youth and Family Services and consider further the Charities Bill.
Transport and Industrial Relations (Kath Henderson, SC-TI@parliament.govt.nz) The committee did not meet this week and will not meet next week. A meeting is scheduled for the morning of 2 December to hear evidence on the financial reviews of the Land Transport Safety Authority, Transfund New Zealand, and Transit New Zealand. This meeting will be open to the public during the hearings of evidence between 10.00 am and 1.00 pm.
