Teachers' Council CEO's Exit Must Be Explained
ACT New Zealand Education Spokesman Deborah Coddington today called on Education Minister Trevor Mallard to explain why the Teachers' Council is advertising for yet another chief executive - its fourth in just over a year.
"I simply couldn't believe it when I saw the council was advertising for a new CEO in yesterday's Dominion-Post. I can't think of another organisation that has turned over so many bosses in such a short space of time," Miss Coddington said.
"The exit of Euan Dempsey, the council's latest CEO, suggests all is not well within the organisation. What worries me greatly is the clandestine manner in which his departure appears to have been handled.
"There has been absolutely no reference to Mr Dempsey's immediate, or imminent, departure on the council's website. The first I knew of it was upon seeing yesterday's ad.
"The Council - championed by Mr Mallard - has lurched from one crisis to another. Plagued by a myriad of problems far too long to list, it's little wonder that many teachers no longer have faith in it.
"Mr Mallard must come out and explain why the Teachers' Council is looking for another CEO and, more importantly, assure the public that no golden handshake has been involved in Mr Dempsey's departure," Miss Coddington said.
