Green Co-leaders to visit Eastern bottleneck
Green Party Co-leaders Jeanette Fitzsimons and Rod Donald, are visiting Auckland tomorrow (Friday 27th August) to see
for themselves the implications for the community and the environment of the latest Eastern Motorway proposal.
"I'm looking forward to seeing the proposed route at first hand because, on initial reading, the new plan appears to
offer the worst of all worlds," said Jeanette Fitzsimons, the Green Transport spokesperson.
"It contains no public transport components, it threatens the same environmental damage as the original plan, it appears
likely to exacerbate congestion as it funnels traffic along clogged arterial routes and it actually creates bottlenecks
at Hobson Bay and where the new road enters the city."
Jeanette and Rod will be accompanied by Stop The Eastern Motorway (STEM) executive officer, Richard Lewis and Auckland
Green MP, Keith Locke.
There will be an opportunity for photos and interviews at:
1/ the viewpoint overlooking part of the proposed route, at the end of St Stephen's Avenue, Parnell at 1:30pm;
2/ the Meadowbank Railway Station viewpoint of Purewa Creek, the environmental area most threatened by the planned
motorway, at 2:15pm.
