Peters Gives Foreshore Assurance
New Zealand First has given an assurance that the interests of Auckland City Council, America's Cup Village, Ports of Auckland and other groups with similar concerns will be protected by the final foreshore and seabed legislation.
Rt Hon Winston Peters said today that existing contracts should continue and he was confident the select committee considering the proposed legislation would ensure this happened.
“The scaremongers and knockers are frantically misrepresenting the intentions of the bill but the key to the legislation is for all parties to feel confident and secure that everyone is being treated fairly.
“We will raise this matter with the Government and look at any other issues that could appear to be creating uncertainty about the future of existing foreshore operations.
“When the select committee has finished its process and made its recommendations we will take another look at the situation and make sure everybody’s interests are protected,” said Mr Peters.
