Kirk - President supports Clem Simich move
29 July 2004
President supports Clem Simich move National Party President Judy Kirk says she supports the decision of Hon Clem Simich who intends to seek election as a list Member of Parliament, and not to seek the National Party Tamaki nomination at the next election.
"Clem has my complete support. On behalf of the Party I want to thank him for his service to the Tamaki electorate. I also wish to thank him in advance for the work he will do on behalf of National for the Party vote in the upcoming election campaign.
"I'd also like to acknowledge the tireless efforts of Clem's wife, Anne, who has been a staunch National Party supporter and worker.
"We think today's decision gives National the best of all worlds.
"It means the experience of Mr Simich will be retained and he will be free to take on the role of Speaker. It also gives National the opportunity to inject new talent in an important electorate.
"We look forward to a vigorous contest in Tamaki as part of the open candidate selection process.
"As President, I will be working with the electorate chair and electorate executive to decide on the selection time frame. It could take a couple of months.
"Make no mistake, National is determined to win the Tamaki seat at the election and do so handsomely," says Mrs Kirk.
