ACT New Zealand Corrections Spokesman Stephen Franks today renewed ACT's call for the abolition of the parole system,
in light of the bungling that has now allowed offenders an opportunity to re-open parole decisions.
"It seems that Dr David Chaplow's involvement might have helped to keep some in prison where they belong. If so, that
is applauded," Mr Franks said.
"But the long history of Dr Chaplow's improper involvement shows just how dangerous it is to have a group, hand-picked
by the Minister, meeting in secret to undo judges' decisions reached in open court.
"There are some decent people on the Parole Board, who are doing their best to make work a system that has absolutely
no justification in the first place. The solution is to abolish parole, and move to a transparent system of automatic
supervision at the end of every prison sentence," Mr Franks said.
