National's Long Law Policy Short On Action
Rt Hon Winston Peters has described National’s law and order policy as empty talk because it provides no extra resources to fight crime in the community.
Mr Peters said few people would disagree with what Dr Brash had to say today about law and order problems but pointed it was not good enough to say what was wrong, then ask voters to trust him to deliver.
“Anyone talking about resolving this serious issue without spelling out the resources required to fight crime simply does not know what they are talking about.
“Where are the extra police staff? How many extra? How much is to be spent building the extra prisons needed to house all the offenders that Dr Brash wants kept behind bars? How much extra is to be spent on crime prevention or detection equipment?
“New Zealand First has already promised to double police numbers to fight crime, to demerge the traffic police tax collectors and to raise the drinking age.
“Unlike National, we know exactly how to fight the increasing lawlessness in the community and how much it would cost. Our policy could be put into effect before lunchtime the day after the election,” said Mr Peters.
