Prime Minister to visit Sydney for tourism promotion
Prime Minister Helen Clark will be in Sydney next week for two events aimed at promoting New Zealand to corporate and tourism audiences.
Helen Clark will be the keynote speaker at the Trans Tasman Business Circle lunch involving senior executives from the Sydney business community on July 8. The TTBC is a network which aims to foster corporate interaction between New Zealand and Australia.
"I will be highlighting the consistently strong performance of the New Zealand economy, as well as the policies we have in place to ensure New Zealand remains a high-performing economy, where the gains are enjoyed by all New Zealanders," Helen Clark said.
Later that evening she will participate in a major Tourism New Zealand event.
"The 100% Pure New Zealand Showcase Event offers a significant opportunity to profile New Zealand to Sydney's opinion leaders", said Helen Clark.
"Australian visitors are extremely valuable to New Zealand's tourism industry. This is a good opportunity to further build our profile in this market – and hopefully change some Australian's perceptions of what New Zealand offers."
In the year to May 2004, there were 770,000 Australian visitors to New Zealand, making it by far New Zealand's largest market. This was an increase of 18% on the previous 12 months. Australians stay an average of 13 days, and tend to make repeat visits as well. The economic contribution from Australian visitors is estimated to be worth $1.1 billion per year (December 2003 estimate).
"The tourism event, combining dinner and performance, will give a real sense of New Zealand's wine, food and culture. It is only part of a broader campaign to ensure that New Zealand is top of mind amongst Australians as a destination," said Helen Clark.
"The 100% Pure New Zealand campaign in Sydney during July will feature outdoor advertising, editorial features, and other promotions. The word of mouth and media coverage from this event will also be considerable."
