Dialogue on Wellington transport issues
Transport Minister Pete Hodgson is looking to begin a dialogue with Wellington local body leaders about the future of
the capital's transport systems.
"Finance Minister Michael Cullen, Wellington's Labour MPs and I want to get a constructive discussion going about the
future development of an integrated transport system that meets the needs of all those in the Wellington region," Mr
Hodgson said.
"The government has increased land transport funding for the region since 1999, most recently with the commitment of an
additional $222 million from the "Investing for Growth" package announced last December.
"At the same time, the Wellington Regional Council has increased its commitment to the funding and development of
various land transport projects over the coming years.
"I believe it is time now that a dialogue to begin between central and local government about Wellington's transport
future, and I have invited the chairperson of the regional council to help me get things rolling.
"The items for possible discussion could include: integrated transport policy for the Wellington region (linkages
between the New Zealand Transport Strategy and the Wellington Regional Land Transport Strategy); road congestion in the
region; Transmission Gully; provision of adequate Rail rolling stock; rail track speeds; Western Line upgrades; future
development of passenger transport services; park and ride Facilities; integration of freight and metro services; and
demand management initiatives.
"This is a substantial list, covering a wide range of interests and I fully expect to engage with a number of other
parties as discussions progress, including representatives of the Mayoral Forum."
