The Lapdog's Lament
New Zealand First leader Rt Hon Winston Peters has asked United Future leader Peter Dunne “just what price he is
willing to pay for his support agreement with Labour after years of being a lapdog”.
He was responding to Mr Dunne’s comparison of United Future’s support for Labour to the 1996-98 National/New Zealand
First coalition.
“This comes on the back of United Future’s last minute withdrawal of support for the seabed and foreshore legislation
over the absolute nonsense of the two words – ‘public domain’,” said Mr Peters.
“This is sour grapes on Dunne’s behalf, he must be feeling a little neglected, and unloved.
“United Future’s poll support shows that its former Christian supporters have realised what a doormat the party is as it
has not stopped the legalisation of prostitution and now seems incapable of stopping gay marriages.
Mr Peters reminded Mr Dunne that New Zealand First has always worked constructively with other parties when supporting
legislation that was good for New Zealand, but “we certainly will not roll over for a scratch like this lapdog”.
“There will be no worm to save you this time Mr Dunne, lapdogs and worms are not a good combination,” said Mr Peters.
