Greens pay respects to Michael King
The Green Party today expressed its deep sorrow at the sudden passing of eminent historian Michael King, saying his
presence and understanding will be greatly missed.
Green Co-leader Jeanette Fitzsimons said the tragic deaths of Michael King and wife Maria Jungowska in a car accident
yesterday could hardly have come at a more crucial time for New Zealand.
"It's a terrible tragedy for all those who knew Michael and Maria personally and for those who have been personally
touched by his books," said Ms Fitzsimons.
"Michael did so much to teach us about our own history for many decades, which is now needed more than ever in the
divisive debate that threatens New Zealand at this time.
"Michael had so much more to give to his country as we enter a time of difficult relationships between Maori and Pakeha.
His was a voice of sanity, understanding and enlightenment in this debate and we are deeply saddened by his passing.
"He was one the Coromandel's most famous residents and I feel privileged to have known him over the years," said Ms
Fitzsimons.
"New Zealand has suffered a huge loss today."
