Shh...Don't Tell Hodgson: Methane Gas On Mars!
Tuesday 30 Mar 2004 Gerry Eckhoff
ACT New Zealand Rural Affairs Spokesman Gerry Eckhoff today predicted that the Labour Government would investigate the possibility of taxing Mars, in light of the discovery of methane gas on the red planet.
"This Government has demonstrated its penchant for loopy ideas, with Climate Control Convenor Pete Hodgson's proposal for a flatulence tax, and Health Minister Annette King's proposed fat tax," Mr Eckhoff said.
"I would not be surprised if Labour now proposed a similar tax on the causes of methane gas discovered on Mars. ACT drove 6,000km campaigning against Labour's ill-considered and unfair FART tax, but I fear that travelling 86 million kilometres to Mars is beyond even our ability.
"I am considering writing to Mr Hodgson, under the Official Information Act, seeking all Cabinet papers relating to this matter - stay tuned," Mr Eckhoff said.
