Terrorist attacks on innocents also attack democracy
Progressive MP Matt Robson says the government must continue to support initiatives to promote democracy and economic development in the Middle East in the wake of shocking terrorist attacks in Iraq and Pakistan that have left scores dead or injured.
"I think everyone would agree with the comments of the United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan who has expressed his personal disgust at terrible suffering caused to innocent civilians in and around Muslim shrines in Iraq and Pakistan during the holy occasion of Ashura.
"The use of violence against innocent, non-combatants can never be justified. Those perpetuating these acts of violence are not only killing and maiming mothers, fathers, sons and daughters but they are also trying to coerce and silence those promoting democratic renewal," the Progressive MP said.
"New Zealand has a proud tradition of promoting an independent and moral foreign policy. Like other governments interested in fostering democracy everywhere, and a fair go for all peoples, we must never be cowered by shadowy anti-democratic groups promoting terror, pain and failure," Matt Robson said.
