Appointment to the Mâori Heritage Council of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust
Associate Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Judith Tizard has announced the appointment of Dr Te Ahukaramû Charles
Royal to the New Zealand Historic Places Trust Mâori Heritage Council for a term of three years.
The Mâori Heritage Council has responsibilities under the New Zealand Historic Placs Trust Act 1993 in relation to the
protection of historic places and areas of Mâori interest in New Zealand, and assisting the Trust to develop and reflect
a bicultural view in the exercise of its powers and functions.
Dr Royal is currently Director of Graduate Studies and Research at Te Wânanga-o-Raukawa. He has a doctorate from
Victoria University in Mâori Performance Art. He has undertaken a number of research consultancies for Te Puni Kôkiri,
the New Zealand Historical Atlas Project, the State Services Commission and the Department of Conservation, and has been
widely published on Mâori historical and cultural issues.
Judith Tizard expressed her confidence in Dr Royal’s appointment to the Mâori Heritage Council. “Dr Royal’s impressive
research skills and knowledge of Mâori historical and cultural issues will add to the skills and experience already on
the Council. I am delighted that he has agreed to serve on the council.”
