NZ gives $200,000 to Iranian earthquake victims
New Zealand is giving $200,000 to help the victims of the devastating earthquake in south-eastern Iran, Duty Minister
Rick Barker said today.
Early reports suggest several thousand people may have been killed and many more injured in the earthquake, which struck
on Friday afternoon New Zealand time near the historic city of Bam. Tens of thousands have been left homeless in
freezing temperatures, most without water, electricity or food.
“The New Zealand contribution will go to the emergency appeal launched by the International Federation of Red Cross and
Red Crescent Societies,” Mr Barker said.
“The Federation is working in close partnership with the Iranian Red Crescent Society, which is managing the operation
in the field.
“The money will be used to provide emergency supplies including family tents, tarpaulins, blankets, kitchen and water
purification equipment, and kerosene for cooking and heating.”
The New Zealand contribution will come from the emergency management and disaster relief fund of the New Zealand Agency
for International Development (NZAID).
