Appointment to the Student Allowance Appeal Authority
Retired District Court Judge John Gatley has been appointed the sole member of the Student Allowance Appeal Authority, Social Development and Employment Minister Steve Maharey said today.
The function of the Authority is to hear and determine appeals made to it in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Education Act. Students have the right to review or appeal some decisions made by StudyLink (a service line of the Ministry of Social Development) relating to student allowances. The appointment will take effect from 16 December 2003.
John Gatley graduated from Victoria University of Wellington after serving eight years as an officer in the Royal New Zealand Army. Between 1980 and 1985 he was a partner of Chapman Tripp in Wellington and was Chairman of the Liquor Licensing Authority from 1990 to 2001. He was appointed a Judge of the District Court in 1985 and retired in 2001.
