Nuclear Weapons Free Zones Conference Called For

Nuclear Weapons Free Zones
Progressive deputy leader Matt Robson today called for the Government to host a conference in Wellington to implement the Southern Hemisphere Nuclear Weapons Free Zone.
Speaking at the Parliamentarians and the Legal Imperative for Nuclear Disarmament conference in Vancouver, Matt Robson said that decisive action is needed to turn good intentions into practical reality, and New Zealand can provide the forum to eliminate nuclear weapons from half the world.
This is vital at a time when even North Korea is claiming a ‘nuclear deterrent capability.’
“And yet in New Zealand, two right wing parties, National and Act, are working to subvert our own nuclear free status, democratically arrived at and overwhelming supported.
“Right now, Richard Prebble is on a US State Department funded trip to Washington and Don Brash is urging us to turn the clock back 20 years and dismantle our nuclear free legislation.
“What New Zealand needs to do is provide the leadership to rid the Southern Hemisphere of nuclear weapons,” said Matt Robson.
