Tough Measures Needed To Stop Smuggling
New Zealand First is calling on the Government to bring in tougher sentences for people caught smuggling New Zealand
wildlife.
“The news that wildlife smuggling is becoming highly profitable to the point that terrorist groups are getting involved
is alarming,” said conservation spokesperson Edwin Perry.
“New Zealand native species are now being advertised on the internet. This is outrageous and it is time for the
Government to get tough.
”Sentences of 5-10 years for smuggling or fines up to $100,00 are needed to show that the Government means business and
to deter anyone from entering into the trade.
“New Zealand’s native species are of huge importance and they are being exploited, risking extinction, by unscrupulous
individuals.
“We must work to save our wildlife before we do not have any left,” said Mr Perry.
