Plea To Sign Petition
Monday 13 Oct 2003 Richard Prebble Press Releases -- Governance & Constitution
ACT Leader Richard Prebble today called on New Zealanders to sign a widely circulating petition calling for a referendum on Labour's Supreme Court Bill.
At a joint press conference with National Leader Bill English and New Zealand First Leader Winston Peters, Mr Prebble said a referendum would be easy to hold.
"All the work has already been done by ACT MP Stephen Franks, and the Clerk of Parliament has approved the wording" Mr Prebble said.
"A Labour Government that truly believed it had the support of the country would hold a referendum.
Mr Prebble said an unprincipled government could, with a bare parliamentary majority, destroy New Zealand's Westminster parliamentary democracy.
"Removing appeals to the Privy Council and setting up her own court with her personal choice of activist judges will let Labour influence the courts for generations.
"Attorney General Margaret Wilson's agenda is to make New Zealand the Socialist Republic of Aotearoa," Mr Prebble said.
