Withdraw Bill Or We’ll Repeal It Says Peters
New Zealand First is calling on the Government to withdraw the legislation that proposes to get rid of the Privy Council and replace it with a New Zealand based Supreme Court.
“The arrogance of this Government is evident in its decision to proceed despite United Future’s belated attack of common sense,” said New Zealand First Leader Rt Hon Winston Peters.
“New Zealanders must have their say about such a major constitutional change.
“In order to have a fair and just appeal council it is essential to retain the Privy Council. It is the independence and geographical remoteness of the Privy Council that provides a detachment that ensures its decisions are free from local concerns and agendas.
“New Zealand First is calling on United Future to support the petition to have a referendum on whether all rights of appeal to the Privy Council should be abolished.
“In the unlikely event that this arrogant administration won’t proceed, despite its paper-thin majority, New Zealand First will undertake to repeal the legislation and return the decision to the people of New Zealand,” said Mr Peters.
