Home Detention A Joke

Home Detention A Joke
New Zealand First has accused the Government of creating a Corrections system that appears to allow any offender, regardless of their crime, to get home detention.
Law and order spokesperson Ron Mark asked the Corrections Minister Paul Swain, in the House today why violent offenders, such as a senior mongrel mob member with a record that includes kidnapping, escaping custody, aggravated robbery and aggravated assault, were given home detention?
“Surprise, surprise, this man has since been arrested for manufacturing methamphetamines and being in possession of a pistol with ammunition. What will his sentence be this time? Home detention again? “Home detention was introduced for people who commit minor crimes, not serious offenders,” said Mr Mark.
“It is bad enough that some of these professional criminals are allowed to serve out the end of their sentences in the comfort of their own homes, but some are even allowed to serve their full sentence on home detention. This is unacceptable.
“New Zealanders want tougher sentences yet the Government seems to be mocking the public by allowing violent criminals to enjoy a holiday on taxpayers’ money.
“It is time for the Government to admit that home detention is a joke and must go,” said Mr Mark.
