New appointment to BIA
Commerce Minister Lianne Dalziel today announced the appointment of Andrew King as a member of the Building Industry Authority.
“Andrew King is recognised as a leader in his field of earthquake engineering. His expertise will greatly assist the Authority in discharging its regulatory and quasi-judicial functions, “ Lianne Dalziel said.
Mr King is the Section Manager Geohazard Solutions at the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences in Wellington. He has 32 years’ experience as a structural engineering consultant, research engineer and technical advisor to New Zealand and international standards and building control organisations. He is highly skilled in earthquake and wind resistant design and assessment procedures of houses and low-rise buildings and has sat on numerous Standard Council technical committees relating to the behaviour of residential and other buildings. He also has experience in the wider aspects of building science, weather and fire resistant design and assessment. Mr King provides technical advice to the Earthquake Commission and in 2002 Mr King was commissioned as a technical advisor to the World Bank to prepare the technical annex to assist the introduction of the new Building Control and Standards Act of Tonga.
Mr King continues to research and develop performance-based engineering criteria for domestic and other types of buildings.
Mr King’s governance experience includes his participation on over 15 building standards review committees. He is the Chair of the Joint Australia / New Zealand Earthquake Loadings Standards Committee and a Past President of the New Zealand Society of Earthquake Engineering. He has also served as a representative on the New Zealand Standards Industry Advisory Group on building design standards.
