Put Kid’s Health First
New Zealand First has warned that the implications of a British study showing that the vast majority of children had
TV’s in their bedrooms should be noted by New Zealand parents.
“In light of the obesity epidemic facing our country it is important that parents are aware of the dangers of inactivity
in their children,” said family affairs spokesperson, Barbara Stewart.
“Children need to socialise and interact with other children and adults. Allowing children to sit and watch TV all day
and for many hours after school cannot be seen as responsible parenting. The use of television and other electronic
equipment as baby sitters will have long term affects on the health of our kids.
“What happened to the days of children playing outside and getting regular exercise? The Government would be better
promoting healthy lifestyles and diets and improving access to free health services than embarking on its politically
correct programme of social engineering. The British study is a timely reminder that it is time to re-order priorities,”
said Mrs Stewart
