‘Public Domain’ Another Step On Path To Republicanism
New Zealand First has criticised the acceptance by some Maori of a concept of ‘public domain’ in relation to our
foreshore and seabed.
“The concept of ‘public domain’ creates legal uncertainty over New Zealand’s international rights. It is also open to
political manipulation and cronyism,” said New Zealand First Maori affairs spokesperson, Bill Gudgeon.
“Any abandonment of the term ‘Crown ownership’ in favour of ‘public domain’ is just another covert step towards
Republicanism. Public domain means nothing more than no exclusive rights to anyone. Guardianship without ownership is
meaningless and guarantees neither access nor conservation,” said Mr Gudgeon.
