Crime, Lawlessness And Liquor Linked – Says Peters
New Zealand First is applauding the move by the Wellington City Council to do what other councils around the country
have done and ban liquor in public places.
“We introduced the Local Government (Prohibition of liquor in public place) Amendment Bill so that councils could take
control of their streets,” said Rt Hon Winston Peters.
“Wellington is now the second most violent city in the country according to police figures released last week, with much
of this being alcohol related.
“Wellington City Council has the opportunity to take up the legislation presented by New Zealand First and help police
in their fight against crime and anti-social behaviour.
“With an increasing amount of people drinking on the streets of Wellington and causing trouble it is time for action to
be taken before the situation gets out of hand.
”The city streets belong to everybody and people should be able to feel that they can safely walk though areas such as
Manners Mall without being threatened by intoxicated people,” said Mr Peters.
