Alexander: No parole for violent offenders
There should be no parole for violent offenders, United Future law and order spokesman Marc Alexander said today.
Speaking as paroled five-time rapist Michael Carroll remained on the run in Christchurch, Mr Alexander said it was time
the safety of the community was put before the hopes and wishes of violent criminals once and for all.
"And today's situation is a case in point.
"A criminal with one of the worst histories around has been paroled, and now, he just walks away one evening - as simple
as that. That's how easily all these supposedly carefully crafted and thought-out parole conditions are breached.
"He simply walks away. And how is every woman in Christchurch supposed to feel today?" Mr Alexander asked.
"Carroll was supposedly closely monitored at a half-way house. Now it's time to put him back where he belongs - behind
bars.
The thinking behind the paroling of dangerous criminals was disturbingly similar to that which saw two killers have
their sentences cut yesterday. "How else can you comprehend the reducing of RSA murderer William Bell and Masterton
murderer Bruce Howse's non-parole periods?"
