Wellington picks up two cultural awards
Wellington Central MP, Marian Hobbs, has congratulated Wellington City Council for winning two Creative Places Awards presented annually by Creative
New Zealand to celebrate local government's contribution to the arts in New
Zealand.
Creative New Zealand chose Wellington City for the Arts Provision Award for "Dance Your Socks Off!" and the Cultural Diversity Award for the "Asia 2000 Diwali Festival of Lights".
"Dance your Socks Off! is a city council initiative with the city's wider dance community and over the last three years has celebrated the diversity of dance in Wellington," Marian Hobbs said. "The Diwali Festival of Lights in October 2002 was a spectacular day-long festival in which more than 500 participants showcased Indian culture to an audience of 30,000.
"Wellington City was the only council to win two category awards and underlines why we can claim to be the cultural capital of New Zealand. Everyone who has participated in, contributed to and supported our vibrant cultural community deserves our thanks and warmest congratulations."
