Tranz Rail Deal Foreign Aid To Australia
ACT New Zealand Leader Richard Prebble today labelled the Labour Government's latest rail proposal as aid to Australia,
calling it a $200 million subsidy from the taxpayer to an Australian transport company.
"Toll Holdings had claimed it was willing to buy Tranz Rail without any kind of Government handout - this $200 million
would buy a lot of hospital operations.
"I believe the Government should have been more open with the public about its proposals. What assurance is there that
Toll Holdings will continue to operate services, like the Gisborne line? How will Toll Holdings operate the rail
ferries?
"These are the sorts of questions we're entitled to know the answer to, before the Government gives away the taxpayers'
hard-earned income," Mr Prebble said.
