Commerce (Michelle Malyon, SC-Commerce@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee met on Thursday, 12 June to further consider the Consumer Credit Bill and the Status of Redundancy Payments Bill. The committee also considered the 2003/04 Estimates for Vote Economic, Industry and Regional Development and the petition of John Dickson.
The committee will next meet on Thursday, 19 June to further consider the Consumer Credit Bill and the petition of John Dickson. The committee will also further consider the 2003/04 Estimates for Vote Economic, Industry and Regional Development. The Minister will be giving evidence and this will be open to the public at approximately 10.20 am.
Education and Science (Angela Van Dam, SC-ES@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee met on Wednesday, 11 June to consider and hear evidence on the 2003/04 Estimates of Appropriation for Vote Education, Vote Education Review Office, and Vote Research, Science and Technology. The committee also considered the New Organisms and Other Matters Bill.
Next week the committee will be meeting in Melbourne and Canberra between Monday, 16 June and Thursday, 19 June. The committee will be visiting House of Representative and Senate standing committees, public sector agencies, and tertiary and research institutions.
Finance and Expenditure (Peter Hurndell, SC-FE@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee met this week to consider the:
- recently-released Monetary Policy Statement
- Estimates of Appropriations for the year ending 30 June 2004 (Vote Finance, Vote Revenue and Vote Energy)
- Fiscal Strategy Report 2003 and the Economic and Fiscal Update 2003
- Supplementary Estimates of Appropriations for the year ending 30 June 2003.
The Governor of the Reserve Bank appeared before the committee and discussed issues relating to the June 2003 Monetary Policy Statement as did the respective vote Ministers for the 2003/04 Estimates of Appropriations.
Next week the committee will meet to consider further the Income Tax Bill and the Monetary Policy Statement. In addition, the committee will meet with a governmental delegation from Uganda. The delegation comprises members from the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development.
Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade (David Sanders, SC-FD@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee met this week to begin its examination of the Estimates. It heard evidence from the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The committee also gave further consideration to the Counter-Terrorism Bill. Next week the committee will be examining Vote Defence, Vote Defence Force and Vote Official Development Assistance.
Government Administration (Lesley Ferguson, SC-GA@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee met on Thursday, 6 June to continue its examination of the 2003/04 Estimates of Appropriations for Vote Statistics, Vote Emergency Management, Vote Ministerial Services and Vote Parliamentary Service. It heard evidence from Minister of Statistics, the Minister of Civil Defence, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives. The committee also heard evidence on Vote Ministerial Services.
The committee will next meet on Thursday, 12 June to examine the 2003/04 Estimates of Appropriations for Vote State Services, Vote Sport and Recreation, and Vote Arts, Culture and Heritage. It will hear evidence from Hon Trevor Mallard as Minister of State Services and Minister for Sport and Recreation, and from Hon Judith Tizard as Associate Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage.
Health (Catherine Parkin, SC-Health@parliament.govt.nz)
This week the committee presented its reports on the 2001/02 financial review of the Auckland District Health Board and the petition of Rodney Hide and 535 others, and on the 2001/02 financial review of the Health Research Council of New Zealand. The committee heard evidence on its inquiry into the proposal to establish a trans-Tasman agency to regulate therapeutic products.
Next Wednesday, the committee will continue its consideration of the Health (Screening Programmes) Amendment Bill. It will also hear evidence from the Minister of Health on the 2003/04 Estimates for Vote Health. This will be from 11.00 am to 12.30 pm, in Room G.002 Parliament House, and will be open to the public.
Justice and Electoral (Louise Sparrer, SC-JE@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee met on 11 June to consider its Estimates for 2003/04, the Supreme Court Bill, the Criminal Records (Clean Slate) Bill and the Clean Slate Bill. It heard evidence on Vote Justice from the Minister of Justice and Ministry of Justice officials.
During the committee's next meeting, on 18 June, it will continue to consider the Supreme Court Bill, the Criminal Records (Clean Slate) Bill and the Clean Slate Bill. The meeting will be held in Room G.005 in Parliament House and will be open to the public from 12.00 noon to 1.00 pm for a hearing of evidence from Professor Philip Joseph on the Supreme Court Bill.

The committee met on 11 June to consider the Criminal Investigations (Bodily Samples) Amendment Bill and hear further evidence on the 2003/04 Estimates for Vote Police. Evidence was given by the Minister of Police and the Commissioner of Police.
The committee next meets on Wednesday, 18 June to further consider the Criminal Investigations (Bodily Samples) Amendment Bill and hear more evidence (from the Minister of Police and the New Zealand Police) on the 2003/04 Estimates for Vote Police. The meeting will be open to the public from 11.30 am to 12.30 pm.
Local Government and Environment (Marie Alexander, SC-LGE@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee next meets on Thursday, 19 June to consider the 2003/04 Estimates for Vote Environment and Vote Climate Change and Energy Efficiency. The meeting will be in Parliament House and will be open to the public from 9.15 am to 10.30 am and 11.00 am to 12.00 pm while the committee hears evidence on the votes from the Minister for the Environment and the Minister of Energy. The committee will also further consider its inquiry into the alleged accidental release of genetically engineered sweet corn plants in 2000 and subsequent actions taken.
Maori Affairs (Miles Reay, SC-MA@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee met on Thursday, 12 June to consider and hear evidence on the 2003/04 Estimates for Vote Treaty Negotiations and to consider the inquiry into the Crown Forestry Rental Trust. The committee will next meet on Thursday, 19 June to consider and hear evidence on the 2003/04 Estimates for Vote Maori Affairs.
The committee is calling for submissions on the Ngati Tama Claims Settlement Bill. The closing date for submissions is 20 June 2003. Submissions should be addressed to Miles Reay, Clerk of the Maori Affairs Committee, Parliament Buildings, Wellington. Information about making a submission can be found on our website.
Primary Production (Bob Bunch, SC-PP@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee met twice this week. On Monday and Thursday the committee gave further consideration to the Wool Industry Restructuring Bill, which is required to be reported back no later than Monday, 16 June 2003. On Monday, the committee also heard evidence on the inquiry into the administration and management of the scampi fishery and gave further consideration to the inquiry and the Wine Bill. On Thursday the committee examined the 2003/04 Estimates for Votes Biosecurity and questioned, via videoconference, the Minister for Biosecurity, the Hon Jim Sutton MP, who was in Christchurch.
Next week the committee meets twice again. On Wednesday, 18 June it will give further consideration to the Wine Bill and on Thursday, 19 June it will commence consideration of the New Zealand Horticultural Export Authority Amendment Bill
(No 2) with hearing of evidence.
Regulations Review (Michael Wilkinson, SC-RR@parliament.govt.nz )
The committee will meet on Wednesday, 18 June to continue its regular scrutiny of new government regulations.
Social Services (Graham Hill, SC-SS@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee met on 12 June to hear evidence on the Estimates of Appropriations for Vote Social Development, Vote Child, Youth and Family Services, and Vote Housing. At the next meeting on 19 June the committee will continue hearing evidence on these votes from the Minister for Social Development and Employment and the Associate Minister with responsibility for Child, Youth and Family Services.
Transport and Industrial Relations (Kath Henderson, SC-TI@parliament.govt.nz)
The committee met on Thursday, 12 June to hear evidence on the 2003/04 Estimates for Vote Transport and was open to the public during the hearing of evidence. The committee also had a public briefing from Hon Matt Robson on his Holidays (Four Weeks Annual Leave) Amendment Bill and considered the Injury Prevention, Rehabilitation, and Compensation Amendment Bill. The committee will next meet on Thursday, 19 June to consider the Holidays Bill and Holidays (Four Weeks Annual Leave) Amendment Bill. The committee will also hear evidence on the 2003/04 Estimates for Vote ACC. This section of the meeting will be open to the public from 12 noon.
