Jury Still Out On John Jury
ACT New Zealand ACC Spokesman Heather Roy today called for ACC Minister Ruth Dyson to launch an inquiry into the case
of 27-year tetraplegic John Jury, who is currently being cared for by his 11-year-old grandson.
"The Minister has said that Mr jury was ACC's responsibility, and `this is not acceptable, Mr Jury cannot be cared for
by an 11 year-old'. But, there is obviously more to this case than the public is being told," Mrs Roy said.
"Over the past 27 years, ACC has tried to provide Mr Jury with suitable care. Yet they appear to have had great
difficulty with the continuity of this care. ACC is well-used to providing care to patients from all walks of life, and
for things to have gone so badly wrong in this case, raises many serious questions that the public - who pay for ACC -
are unaware of.
"Government and health agencies have known about this case for weeks. As a taxpayer-funded Government agency, ACC must
be transparent about why an 11 year-old boy seems to be the carer of choice for Mr Jury.
"I am calling for an inquiry into Mr Jury's case, to determine why ACC caregivers - who are trained professionals and
used to dealing with the most troublesome of situations - are having so much difficulty in dealing with this particular
patient," Mrs Roy said.
