Impressive collection of student art on tour
Students, teachers and members of the public are invited to visit the “Top Art” exhibition, a collection of the best art
from last year’s senior secondary students which is touring New Zealand, Education Minister Trevor Mallard said today.
The exhibition opened at Auckland Girls Grammar School today where it will be on display for the next three days before
touring the country.
Top Art is organised by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority to show this year’s seventh formers the standard of
work needed to score 90 plus in Bursaries Art.
The 25 folios in the exhibition cover Design, Painting, Photography, Printmaking and Sculpture and are the top practical
art folios from the 2002 University Bursaries examination.
“Top Art contains some stunning work from young artists I expect to hear more of in the future,” Trevor Mallard said.
“Top Art gives teachers and students around the country an indication of the quality of work that scores very high
marks. It also gives the rest of us an indication of the vast and impressive artistic talent amongst young New
Zealanders.
“The arts have a vital place in education. An arts education is central to the development of innovative, creative,
literate and critical-thinking New Zealanders.
“And while all students benefit from an education in the arts, the new arts curriculum is ensuring a solid grounding for
those who will go on to develop careers in the arts,” Trevor Mallard said.
During the previous three years, the Top Art displays have proven hugely successful. This year 15 regional education
advisory services are hosting the collection.
In some regions, Top Art will be on display at public art galleries.
