Tourism Board appointments announced
Minister of Tourism Mark Burton today announced the three-year appointment of two new members, Sean Murray and Kathy
Guy, to the New Zealand Tourism Board (NZTB), the governance body of Tourism New Zealand. The Minister also announced
the reappointment of Mike Tamaki as a member and the reappointment and promotion of Peter Stubbs to the position of
Deputy Chair, also for a period of three years.
Mark Burton said that Tourism New Zealand’s governance needs would be best met by balancing stability with new
appointees. The quality of nominations for these positions was outstanding, and the level of interest, both from
stakeholder groups and the wider community, was pleasing.
“Peter Stubbs promotion to the position of Deputy Chair is a reflection of his strong contribution as a member of the
NZTB. Mr Stubbs is a partner at Simpson Grierson, the immediate past President of the Events and Sponsorship Association
of New Zealand, and Chair of the Hamilton City Council’s Event Fund Allocation Team.
“Mike Tamaki, currently a member of NZTB, is a Director of Tamaki Maori Village, a multi-award winning Rotorua business
with a turnover of $12 million per annum and a staff of 123. Mr Tamaki has two additional businesses in development,
both which promise to be significant additions to New Zealand’s tourism sector. His reappointment will ensure that the
Board continues to benefit from his unique range of commercial and cultural tourism skills over the next three years.
“Sean Murray, a veteran of 25 years in the tourism industry, currently holds the position of General Manager—Commercial
of Tourism Holdings Limited. I appointed Mr Murray to the position of Chair of the Tourism Research Council in 2000.
Under his focussed leadership, the Council has driven a challenging work program, gaining Mr Murray wide-ranging respect
across the sector. His strong skills in marketing, strategic planning, and public policy will be an excellent addition
to the NZTB.
“Kathy Guy’s tourism career spans 23 years, giving her an in-depth understanding of the sector, both locally and
globally. She is currently the General Manager of The Grand Chateau, Mt Ruapehu, and has extensive international
experience in conference management and co-ordination. She has served as the Chair of Tourism Lake Taupo, and was
involved in setting up the Ruapehu Marketing Group.
“I know that the calibre of the Board will ensure good governance and prudent management for the whole of New Zealand’s
thriving tourism industry.”
