New board chair appointed to NZQA
Education Minister Trevor Mallard announced the appointment of Professor Graeme Fraser as Chair of the Board of the New
Zealand Qualifications Authority.
Trevor Mallard said Professor Fraser’s extensive academic and administrative experience made him ideal for the position.
“Graeme Fraser has had a notable academic career in teaching and research and I welcome his appointment to the NZQA
board.
"His extensive knowledge of the functions of the Qualifications Authority and its relationship with the wider tertiary
sector will be a real asset. He has significant leadership skills, demonstrated in his work at Massey University, and
nationally with the Committee for University Academic Programmes," Trevor Mallard said.
Until recently Professor Fraser was Acting Vice-Chancellor of Massey University. Since the inception of the Committee
for University Academic Programmes (CUAP) in 1990, Professor Fraser has been a member, and Chair since 1996. CUAP is
responsible for the accreditation and approval of university qualifications.
The appointment follows the resignation of Dr Frank Wood, who became NZQA Board Chair in June 1999.
“Frank Wood has played a key role in re-establishing the Qualifications Authority’s status following a truly terrible
period. I thank him for that,” Trevor Mallard said.
