Personal Statement From Mark Gosche
“Today I have confirmed to the Prime Minister my intention to step down from the Cabinet and resign my portfolios of
Housing, Pacific Island Affairs, Corrections and Racing.
“Last May (2002) my wife Carol had a life threatening brain haemorrhage which has left her severely disabled and in need
of 24 hour care. She is still unable to return home and faces a very long period of rehabilitation. To complicate
matters she is also a chronic asthmatic and is at present recovering from a bout of pneumonia.
“It is a enormous privilege to be a member of Cabinet and it is a job of great responsibility. To fulfil that
responsibility well is a challenge at the best of times. Give my current and on-going personal circumstances I believe
it is best to step aside from that role and concentrate on fulfilling my responsibilities as MP for Maungakiekie.
“This last year has been a very difficult one – but I have been overwhelmed by the support I have received from very
many people. Friends and family of course but also people in my electorate, people I have worked with throughout New
Zealand and the staff in Parliament and government departments.
“All Members of Parliament have been exceedingly generous and understanding of my circumstances and my government
colleagues have supported me wholeheartedly. I thank all these people.
“By changing my role in this government I believe I can better serve the interests of my electorate as well as my wife
and family.”
