Copeland: Brothel-keeping and pimping should remain illegal
United Future MP Gordon Copeland believes that brothel keeping, procuring and pimping should remain illegal in New
Zealand.
The Prostitution Reform Bill currently before Parliament as a conscience vote would repeal the relevant sections of the
Crimes Act to make those activities legal for the first time in New Zealand's history.
Mr Copeland said, "From Michael Joseph Savage to Sir Geoffrey Palmer the proud tradition of the Labour Party has been to
vigorously oppose the exploitation of the many for the greed of the few.
"I am dumbfounded therefore that on this occasion all the Labour members of Cabinet voted for the bill on its second
reading. I hope we might see that change.
"Parliament should proceed with great care on this issue. I think most New Zealanders are bright enough to figure out
the kind of person who will be attracted to the business of pimping or brothel keeping. Let's be frank - they are people
who are prepared to exploit young women for sordid monetary gain.
"Some Members of Parliament seem to think that prostitutes employed in brothels will have collectively-agreed employment
contracts protecting them from exploitation. It's time to remove the rose-tinted glasses.
"The reality is that the prostitutes will work on commission so that their bosses can line up the latest Mercedes Benz,
dress well, and generally live the life of Riley. Such people couldn't care less that their wealth and lifestyle will
flow from so-called work which obliges a woman to sell her body and her soul.
"New Zealand can do without it," he said.
