Dunne highlights legal anomaly
United Future New Zealand leader, Peter Dunne, is seeking a law change to protect underage children from sexual advances
by older women.
Mr Dunne has written to Justice Minister, Phil Goff, saying," I have had a case drawn to my attention by a constituent
involving a female employee who freely admits having had a sexual relationship with a thirteen-year-old boy."
The matter has been raised with the police and other authorities, but their advice is that neither the Crimes Act nor
any other legislation covers these types of offence, whether rape or consensual sex.
"Subsequent enquiries by my office reveal that precisely the same situation applies where women/girl relationships are
involved.
"These relationships do not involve any form of coercion. However, in similar circumstances involving males, quite
properly an offence is considered to have been committed."
Mr Dunne says there seems to be an extraordinary anomaly in the law here which needs urgent attention and he has asked
Mr Goff for an early indication of the Government's intentions in this regard.
