More state houses needed for low income families as housing costs rise
Progressives are pushing for more state houses to be built, following the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) survey shows
housing costs are rising faster than the cost of living.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) March quarter 2003 report released today shows the CPI rose 0.4 per cent overall, but
housing costs rose 1 per cent which would translate to 4 per cent for the year.
"Progressives are pushing for more state houses to be built in the upcoming budget. The cost of housing is the biggest
budget item low income families face. Cheaper housing is needed for low income families.
"Changes in housing costs are the reason many families become transient, often changing addresses. This means children
never get to settle into the same school and can not possibly make the best of their education.
"The introduction of income related rents for state house tenants has improved the lives of many families around the
country but many people have not been able to get a state house.
"The Progressives are pushing for a greatly increased state house building program to provide low income families with a
stable home and give their children a secure and healthy start in life," said Matt Robson MP.
