Governor-General To Travel To Ankara And Gallipoli
The Governor-General Dame Silvia Cartwright is to make a state visit to Turkey later this month, Government House
announced today. Dame Silvia will travel to the Turkish capital, Ankara, where she will meet Turkish President Ahmet
Necdet Sezer.
In Ankara Dame Silvia will lay a wreath at the Anitkabir Ataturk Mausoleum and will be accorded an official welcome and
lunch by the Turkish President. Dame Silvia will also meet the Prime Minister of Turkey and the Deputy Speaker of the
Turkish Parliament.
Dame Silvia will also lead the New Zealand delegation to the 2003 ANZAC Day commemorations at Gallipoli, which extend
throughout Thursday 24 and Friday 25 April.
On Thursday 24 April the commemorations include the Turkish International Service, at which Dame Silvia will speak, and
the French and British services. On Friday 25 April Dame Silvia will deliver a keynote address at both the Dawn service
and the New Zealand service at Chunuk Bair. She will also attend the Australian service at Lone Pine and the Turkish
National service for the 57th Regiment.
During the absence of the Governor-General from 20 April to 3 May, the Chief Justice, Dame Sian Elias, will act as
Administrator of Government.
