Govt loses credibility over rotting homes
National says building industry professionals are so concerned about lack of action over the rotting homes crisis they
are writing their own reports about poor building structure rather than going to the Building Industry Authority.
"The industry and the public have totally lost confidence in the BIA when the Government continues to employ the chief
executive who failed to act on the rotting homes issue over many years," says National Housing Spokesperson Dr Wayne
Mapp.
"Here we have the person who was at the centre of why building standards have fallen down, continuing to work at the
BIA. People just don't think this is credible and this is why engineers are writing their own reports and submitting
them direct to the Minister.
"The Government's handling of the rotting homes crisis is a complete joke. It has been flat-footed throughout this saga
and continues to make poor decisions.
"My biggest concern is that, despite the Minister promoting reports released on this crisis, there is still nothing to
stop a rotting home being built today - and there are many that could potentially rot under construction right now," Dr
Mapp said.
