Nz First Pleased Dog Ideas Considered
New Zealand First is pleased that its suggestion of microchip identification for dogs as announced on 12 February 2003
is being supported by local councils and the Internal Affairs Minister.
Justice spokesperson Dail Jones says the use of microchips would be a simple and easy process as part of new measures to
protect the public from irresponsible dog owners and dangerous breeds of dogs.
Mr Jones says New Zealand First has proposed a number of tougher dog controls, including the microchips, and tougher
penalties for owners who fail to keep their dogs under control.
“It is time for some action to protect the public. For the past six weeks the Minister has been sitting on his hands
over this.
“Every day we hear news of a fresh dog attack somewhere. It is time to get some teeth into the dog laws and to enforce
them strictly.”
