ACT Welcomes National Party Support on Iraq
ACT Leader Richard Prebble said he welcomed National Party's Foreign Affairs Spokesman Wayne Mapp's statement on Iraq.
"It is pleasing to see National now making a stand along with ACT that New Zealand must support our traditional allies -
Australia, Britain and the United States.
"National's position would be stronger if this were a statement by their Leader, Bill English. I do hope that Wayne
Mapp's statement is the party's position.
"There will be severe consequences to New Zealand from the Labour Government's scheme to support meaningless diplomacy
rather than effective action. A stronger stand by National earlier would have forced Labour to debate in Parliament its
policies that have no intellectual consistency.
"How can New Zealand rely on a United Nations that will not vote to enforce its own resolutions?
"ACT is hopeful that we will be able to force a parliamentary debate.
"The Speaker has agreed to ACT's request for a special meeting of the Business Committee at 9am tomorrow to discuss the
need for a full parliamentary debate on the issue of Iraq, and the post-Saddam Hussein world - the biggest issue facing
this nation and the world. Now that National has taken a position, this will assist in getting a proper debate of the
issues.
