Resignation Indicative Of System Failures
The fact that one of Timaru Hospital's longest serving senior doctors has resigned, over safety concerns, highlights
the problems endemic in our current health system, ACT New Zealand Health Spokesman Heather Roy said today.
"Dr John Doran has worked at Timaru Hospital for 31 years. He attributes his resignation to the same conditions which
led to the hospital's rolling strikes," Mrs Roy said.
"During his time at the hospital, Dr Doran has been Medical Advisor, and is well known in the medical community. He
will be greatly missed at Timaru Hospital, and difficult to replace. His resignation will send a message to provincial
hospitals that have trouble recruiting and retaining staff.
"It may not be long before we see other doctors of Dr Doran's calibre resigning, pushed out by a Health Minister who is
quick to blame health professionals when things go wrong, but reluctant to help them when they are in need," Mrs Roy
said.
