Government Administrative Committee Dumping Ground for Dog Control
ACT Leader Richard Prebble said today that the Government Administrative Committee was a totally unsuitable committee
to look at dog control.
"The Committee itself is very junior and has no experience in local government.
"The Labour government uses the Government Administrative Committee as its dumping ground for issues where it has no
answers - like the leaky buildings inquiry.
"The proposal to add four MPs to the Government Administrative Committee would not just make it unwieldy, it also shows
a lack of perspective that this would be the biggest committee.
"Dr Cullen complained that referring the issue of dog control to local government will mean time delays but this is not
necessarily a bad thing.
"The Minister of Local Government, Mr Carter, has admitted he has no proposal and no ideas.
"Rushed legislation is usually bad legislation.
"The ACT party has not denied leave to the government to refer specific proposals to the select committee if and when
the government has any.
"What we have done is ensured that a committee with some knowledge of local government is now going to be considering
the issue," said Mr Prebble.
