The case against Iraq grows
US Secretary of State Colin Powell's detailed and comprehensive presentation to the UN shows how important it is for the New Zealand Government to back efforts by the US and UK to obtain a second resolution from the Security Council, says National's Foreign Affairs spokesperson Wayne Mapp.
"It is clear that Iraq is in "material breach" of its obligations under resolution 1441. Saddam Hussein has continued to wilfully obstruct the weapons inspectors and consistently tried to cover up the true extent of his weapons programme.
"Protestations by Saddam Hussein's officials can be safely ignored. They are proven liars, and his dictatorial regime is lead by murderers and torturers.
"New Zealand should be supporting the US and UK in seeking a mandate from the UN Security Council for any action against Iraq.
"UN Security Council resolutions have to be capable of enforcement, especially against states like Iraq, which has a record of invading other countries and using chemical weapons," said Dr Mapp.
