Greens disappointed with Govt's "sustainable development" plan
The Green Party is extremely disappointed the Government's Sustainable Development action plan does not address the
fundamental need for New Zealanders to change their excessive consumption and waste behaviours, Green Party Co-Leader
Jeanette Fitzsimons said today.
Ms Fitzsimons said the strategy released by Environment Minister Marian Hobbs today was firmly locked into the
Government's fixation with higher growth, which did not bode well for a sustainable future.
"It is very disappointing the Government has not tackled the question of what is unsustainable about the way we do
things now and how to change it. The Government is not prepared to do anything to achieve sustainability that might
affect growth," Ms Fitzsimons said.
"Marian Hobbs has taken the wrong approach. Sustainable development is not about 'how to grow the economy' but rather
how to develop our whole society to grow our overall wellbeing", Ms Fitzsimons said.
