Welcome Aboard, PANZ
ACT New Zealand Rural Affairs Spokesman Gerry Eckhoff today welcomed Public Access New Zealand's announcement that they unequivocally support ACT's view over public access to private land.
"It is very gratifying that an organisation dedicated to ensuring public access in the rural environment has publicly recognised that private property is sacrosanct," Mr Eckhoff said.
"In their enthusiasm, however, they did misrepresent ACT New Zealand's position over public land per se. Publicly owned land managed by DOC should always allow public access. With more than 33 percent of New Zealand in Crown ownership, I do question, however, whether the Government should keep adding to this estate.
"The question of equity also arises. While the tramping community has received $350 million to assist in their enjoyment of the great outdoors, few other recreational pursuits have been as fortunate. I would also welcome PANZ stating publicly that private owners of leasehold land are subject to the same rights of quiet enjoyment as freehold landowners.
"ACT looks forward to joining with PANZ in securing private property rights for all New Zealanders," said Mr Eckhoff.
