Cyclone relief equipment for Fiji
An RNZAF C-130 aircraft carrying 600 tarpaulins, 1000 water containers and water purification equipment left the
Whenuapai airbase for Nadi late this afternoon to support the Fijian cyclone relief programme. (Memo Eds: aircraft was
scheduled to depart at 1600).
The support is being offered by the government's international development agency, NZAID to overcome lack of shelter and
clean drinking water. The tarpaulins will be used to provide temporary shelter for residents of Vanua Levu, Fiji's
second largest island, which was hit by Cyclone Ami last week following recent hurricane damage to homes in the outer
islands of Fiji.
A damage assessment was carried out immediately after the cyclone early
last week by an RNZAF P-3 aircraft carrying Fijian and Australian officials.
