One in three Treasury staff earn more than $100k
Helen Clark’s frugal Government has turned into bloated Government, National says after revealing huge salary increases within Treasury.
“The number of Treasury staff earning more than $130,000 a year has sky-rocketed from 35 a year ago to more than 58 this year,” says National Party leader Bill English.
“Given that Treasury employs less than 300 people, that’s nearly 20% earning more than $130,000.
National released figures obtained after written Parliamentary questions to Finance Minister Dr Michael Cullen.
“Within Treasury there are more people earning over $130,000, than in any of the other 11 salary bands. When National was in Government there were only 15 Treasury officials earning that kind of cash.
“Now, nearly one in three Treasury staff earn more than $100,000 a year - that’s more than two and a half times the average wage.
“Helen Clark entered office on a crusade against largesse in the public service. It seems the Government has relaxed that attitude but has forgotten to tell the voters.
“Helen Clark has broken her promise of a frugal public service.
“Why is the Government paying treasury so much when it doesn’t take its advice?” Mr English said.
