Lock-Up Eco Lunatics Says New Zealand First
New Zealand First has described the so-called ‘Biodiversity Action Group’, who claimed to have released possums onto Kapiti Island, as a bunch of absolute lunatics.
Conservation spokesperson Edwin Perry said those to blame should be apprehended and prosecuted.
“It is incomprehensible to think that any group would release 11 possums onto Kapiti Island, one of New Zealand’s most important conservation sanctuary’s,” said Mr Perry.
“Kapiti Island is of huge importance to our country where species such as the Kiwi and Kakapo are kept out of the way of predators.
“The cost to get Kapiti Island to where it is today has been enormous, as well as the huge amount of work put in by DOC. Anyone who threatens to destroy part of New Zealand’s unique wildlife must be completely mad.
“We fully support any work that DOC need to do in order to find out if these threats are in fact true.
Mr Perry said he was confident that authorities would quickly get to the bottom of the issue.
