Nats call to end nuclear-free policy free of common sense
National MP Gerry Brownlee's call for an end to New Zealand's ban on nuclear-powered ships is so devoid of commonsense as to be laughable, Green Party Co-Leader Jeanette Fitzsimons said today.
Ms Fitzsimons said the National Party was clearly trying to get into single figures in the polls by pursuing such an unpopular approach.
"Hasn't the National Party understood by now that our nuclear-free status is strongly supported by the vast majority of New Zealanders," Ms Fitzsimons said.
"It is an icon New Zealanders are extremely proud of, and the proposal to review it is going nowhere. We are seen as leading the world with our nuclear-free policy.
"Why on earth would we abandon something so many other countries around the world envy."
